Do you want to drop weight , look and feel great? If the answer is yes, then you would want to try out the standard carnivore diet!
For the last few months, I have followed Shawn Baker and his Carnivore Diet Advocacy. I went back and forth on the idea of it all. “Is it really healthy to just only meat?” I understand that we have been brainwashed to believe that many of the current diets are, “unsafe” or “unhealthy.” I started doing a lazy version of Keto a few years ago, and in my honest opinion, it works. I have tried many diets over the years and usually I quit after a few weeks. With my busy lifestyle, I cannot keep up with the counting, eat only salads ,drink only juices and vegetarians. I have tried them all.
I always tell people; I do not go against or force a diet or anyone. I believe that you should do what works for you. When I tried a vegetarian diet for 8 months, I didn’t have great results. I put on a lot of weight, my A1C increased, my hair and fingernails were brittle, and I was always lethargic. I'm not saying that being a vegetarian was bad, but it didn't work out for me. I have a horrible sweet tooth, and I know that I must have a diet that eliminates sweets. Growing up in a low-income household, we made do with what we had. My neighborhood didn't have a Whole Foods grocery store or fruit markets. Like many Americans growing up with limited resources, we ate cheap and unhealthily. Mick Jagger said, “Old Habits Die Hard.” I no longer live in an urban community, and I have a health food store at the corner of my tree lined street. After watching several YouTube Videos and google researching the Carnivore Diet, I figured, what the hell… I will do it for 30 days and see what happens.
There are many variations of the Carnivore Diet, but the 3 mains are The Standard Carnivore, Strict Carnivore and Keto Carnivore. The Standard Carnivore consist of all types of meat and fish, eggs and dairy, spices, salt, pepper and coffee. The Strict Carnivore is beef only to eat, water to drink and salt for seasoning. Then, there is Keto Carnivore which is mainly animal foods and keto approved plant foods. My motto is K.I.S.S. - Keep It Simple Stupid. I chose to try the Standard Carnivore Diet. It gave me a varied of meat options. I was working midnights and I needed coffee. I might also love lemon pepper wings. I added 16-8 intermittent fasting. This gives me 16-hours of fasting and an 8-hour eating window. When I started December 31, 2019, I weighed 232.4 pounds.
The first few days, I felt amazing. I dropped 2 pounds in 2 days. I felt a weird mental clearness and was energized. I was mostly eating 2 lbs. of ground beef a day and drinking at least 1 gallon of water per day. I fell in love with Powerade Zero while practicing Lazy Keto, so I drank at least 3 of those a day. On January 10th, I weighed 225 pounds. I could not believe it. Me, a deuce and a quarter…? I haven't seen that weight in 6 years or more. After the 2-week mark, the weight started to slow down, and I was discouraged for a while. I kept reminding myself, I only lost 3 pounds last December doing Lazy Keto. As of January 31, 2020, I weigh 216.8 pounds!
My tips and warnings:
Whenever I would eat high fatty foods or drink too much coffee, I would experience the, “Don't Trust a Fart syndrome”. Google it or trust me, you should never trust a fart! I never felt constipated, but I wasn’t having a bowel movement every day.
Being a registered nurse in the ER has it benefits. You always have access to doctors. I work with a doctor that did Keto for a long time and he said it’s fine. I continued to take my vitamins during my 31 days. I suffered from horrible cramping, (low magnesium) when I started Keto. Most of the times I would eat one meal a day with my intermittent fasting. I never felt hungry on this diet until I would start eating. I never tracked micros, (too much work). I joined a few carnivore supports groups on Facebook. Sometimes it was helpful, but with anything use discernment. I did not try carnivore to clear up an autoimmune issue or to reset my body. I tried the diet to help me fight off my sugar cravings and push my mind to a higher level. It takes 21 days to create a habit and I just completed 31 days.

I want to provide some insight here to why go carnivore. I have read posts from people asking... does carnivore 'cure' this and that... carnivore does not cure anything; this is merely an elimination diet. Most people are exhibiting sicknesses/autoimmune, weight gain etc. due to food they are eating and are not sure what is the culprit. The carnivore aka. "elimination diet" helps you just eliminate all the possible contaminants. We are simply going back to basics i.e. meat, minerals and fat which are the building blocks to your body's nutrition. Once your body starts to heal due to the absence of the toxins that have been damaging your gut for most of us (me included) for many years. you can add back one food item at time (if you wish) if your body reacts to that food then you are able to identify clearly what foods are not supporting your body. So, if you eat seasoning and it doesn't appear to affect your body then eat seasoning. asking us if "you can eat this and eat that" it doesn't matter we don't set the rules. your body does. It’s not case of fitting in to the "rules" it’s about identifying what foods are affecting your body so you can avoid them. I hope this helps.
It’s an elimination diet. Whether it’s necessary for everyone with autoimmune problems to be 100% carnivore is doubtful. I have cured (remission at least) candida and leaky gut, chronic fatigue and pain, my life is transformed, and I’ve lost 48lbs. Now I still eat 90% of my calories from meat, fish and eggs, but can tolerate some salad, green veg and olive oil, even 95% chocolate occasionally. I still consider myself mainly carnivore, but it’s not for religion, it’s for health reasons alone.
My bottom line is that I absolutely love the Carnivore Diet. As this anonymous author said, I will continue to be 80/90 percent carnivore and sneak in an occasional protein shake or bar. Maybe some orange flavored tic-tacs or even a salad.
We all can be masters at our craft, but you have to make a choice. What I mean by that is, there are inherent sacrifices that come along with that. Family time, hanging out with friends, being a great friend, being a great son, nephew, whatever the case may be. There are sacrifices that come along with making that decision. -Kobe Bryant
